DIY: Deodorant

YES! You can make your own deodorant.

Just like pre-packaged foods, pre-packaged beauty products are no stranger to unnecessary, and often toxic, ingredients.

It's been a month since I started using this concoction and I must say, I'm a fan. It's incredibly cheap and easy to make and most importantly, it works!

What you need:

1/4C Baking Soda

1/4C Arrowroot Powder

1/3C Coconut Oil

4T Cornstarch

Essential Oil of choice (I use Lavender)

What to do:

Mix them all together, put in a jar & rub on your pits!

Note: Since coconut oil becomes liquid in hot temperatures and solid in cooler, the consistency of the deodorant change a bit from hot to cold temperatures, too.

Starting your own home practice can seem daunting, confusing and awkward. But instead of using that as an excuse, let's embrace it.

Here are seven steps that will make starting your own yoga practice today far easier than you thought:

1. Just start.
A home yoga practice isn't just for those who are teachers or those who have "been doing yoga forever."

There's no specific time when you are ready to start your own home practice, but if you've thought about it, I'd say the time is now. Getting lead by a teacher in a class is awesome, but there comes a time, when to dig even deeper, you have to cultivate your own practice.

Practicing your own yoga sequence tailored to how your body feels, the mood you're in and what's going on in your life is something magical that only you can create.

2. Keep it short.
The goal of a home practice is not to reach 60 or 90 minutes of graceful, perfect flow. The goal is to move, feel good, and de-stress. Start with even just a couple minutes and see where it takes you.

3. Be okay with it feeling awkward.
Even if you have been taking group classes for years it will feel strange not being led by someone. Embrace the awkward and drop the judgments. Give yourself time to get used to it. You will eventually. It doesn't need to look pretty.

4. Your mind will wander, your roommate will interrupt, your dog will lick your face. And that's fine. If you have a space where you can be uninterrupted that's a plus, but most of us don't. Eventually you will learn to not feel so weird in front of whoever might be getting ready for work around you. Heck, maybe they'll join you.

Slowly but surely, the space in which you roll out your mat, wherever that may be, will feel like your yoga space regardless of what is happening around you or what the space looks like.

5. Put your phone and computer out of sight and earshot.
This is an obvious one. Unplug and make these distractions a no-brainer by keeping them away. They will be there when you're done.

6. Pick poses (or even just one) that feel good.
See what comes natural to you. Is there a pose in a yoga class that you just love when it comes up because it feels so awesome? Try that one. Are you feeling achy in certain places from exercising the day before? Anything in life that's keeping you hung up? Hone in on that.

Yoga is linking breath with movement. It's that simple. So if all you're in the mood for are some simple relaxing stretches, that's yoga.

7. Stick with it (and have fun!)
Just like anything else, a routine takes repetition. Give yourself time to get into a rhythm without judgment or striving for perfection. Go on and get silly when you want to, move in easy ways that feel good, and most importantly: do what will put a smile on your face.

Why I'm Not Vegan

I get the question a lot: "You're vegan, right?"

My answer: No.

Then it's often: "Oh so you're paleo, pesitarian, flexitarian..."

Nope. I'm not a subscriber to any specific diet.

Not necessarily for the reason that i believe humans should eat animal products, but that i don't believe in rules.

Rules create stress, anxiety and room for failure.

And when you break the rules (because you inevitably will), then comes guilt.

That all just sounds like a big downer to me. So i pass.

What's my rule of thumb on eating healthy?

Eat to feel good.

I enjoy a plant-heavy diet because it makes me feel good.

I choose to drink warm lemon water in the morning and green smoothies in the afternoon, because they make me feel good.

And that's always what i'm aiming for. Plus i might have a mild obsession with veggies: cooking with them, taking photos of them, shopping for them...

Healthy eating can get very complicated if you let it, but if you slow down & listen closely you might be guided in the right direction.

Or maybe you opted for the cheeseburger this time. and that's fine.

If i had a diet, it's manifesto would go something like this:

Eat as many veggies as possible.
Drink tons of water.
Dont keep unhealthy snacks too close at hand.
Eat food as close from out of the ground as possible, when possible.
Get creative.
Eat to feel good.
Enjoy the rest.

what you need:

1TB juice of an orange

1T baking soda

what to do:

mix together. the amounts are not exact science, so add as much of each to make the consistency you like.

How To Make The Perfect Green Smoothie

there are really an unlimited number of ways to make a green smoothie. so instead of giving you just one recipe, i'm giving you the steps to build the best tasting & most healthy green smoothie every time. and tailored just to your taste.

1. liquid

water is my go-to, but coconut water or nut milk (try my almond milk or walnut milk) are great also.

2. greens

spinach, swiss chard, romaine & kale are all awesome. mix them up. you can now even get pre-packaged mix of baby kale, swiss chard & spinach which makes it super easy.

3. emulsifier

i pretty much always add a banana. avocado is another option.

4. more veggies

try cucumbers, celery, broccoli, zucchini or just more greens!

3. fruit

apple & pear work really well. also good are pineapple, clementines, mango, grapes, peaches & berries.

unless i'm using nut milk or almond butter, i ALWAYS add the juice of a lemon or a couple limes.

4. add-ons

try adding chia, flax oil, almond butter, ginger root, turmeric root, raw cacao, an acai packet or herbs like cilantro, parsley or mint. i usually just use common sense to decide whether any of these will taste well with the rest of the smoothie.

my rule of thumb is to have 2/3 ingredients be veggies & 1/3 fruit. if you're new to the green smoothie world, you might want to start with 1/2 and slowly start incorporating more veggies & less fruit. because more veggies are always better!

for example, a 2/3 veggie smoothie might look like this:

2C filtered water
3 handfuls swiss chard
3 handfuls spinach
1 cucumber
handful parsley
1 banana
1 apple
juice of 1 lemon

a slightly fruitier green smoothie might look like this:

2C filtered water
3 handfuls swiss chard
1 cucumber
1 banana
1 apple
juice of 1 lemon

and if you're a true beginner, maybe start with something really easy like this:

1.5C filtered water
3 handfuls spinach
1 banana
1C blueberries

(these each make between 40-60oz which is 2-3 medium servings)

having a high quality blender like a vitamix (WTF is a vitamix?) is really helpful when blending veggies. it's faster, easier & blends more finely which makes your smoothies taste better.

tips:
- blend the liquid and greens FIRST, then throw everything else in & blend the rest
- spinach is the most easily disguised in taste & texture. newbies might want to start there
- mix up your greens, veggies & fruit to get the max variety of vitamins & minerals
- double the batch so you have one ready for the following day
- make a big batch & freeze a few (ball jars are great, get the jars that are specifically freezer-safe). defrost by placing on kitchen counter while you sleep & it will be ready by morning!
