Featured on MindBodyGreen: Why We Didn’t Want A Wedding (But Had a Weddingmoon Instead)

Read all about "Weddingmoon" below, or on the MindBodyGreen website here: http://bit.ly/1EEdNQ4

After six years of dating, followed by four months of engagement, my partner and I slowly began talking about what type of wedding we wanted. The more we talked, the more we knew that we either wanted to invite everyone we knew, cared about and loved — or no one but the two of us.

We narrowed it down to what was most important: to create an environment for our marriage ceremony that would be relaxed, and that would make us feel excited and happy.

Quickly, we realized that we just wanted the two of us at our marriage ceremony. We were celebrating ourselves, our connection, and our future together, after all. Plus, some of our favorite, most intimate and memorable times together have been adventures camping, canoeing and traveling. Why not recreate these experiences in the ultimate "wedding" weekend?

And so we did. And we dubbed it a "weddingmoon."

What's a weddingmoon?" you're probably — or definitely — asking. Well, it combines the intimacy of a honeymoon with the straightforward act of getting married. The rest is up to your imagination.

With just about a month of lead time, we booked a cabin on a remote mountaintop, told our families our plans (who weren't upset at their absence in our plans, nor were they even too surprised). Then we got to planning the rest.

So on September 25, 2014 we ventured up to Topsham, Vermont from Newport, Rhode Island to embark on our weddingmoon weekend. I wore a dress, we exchanged vows, there were beautiful flowers, we ate delicious cake, and the night was filled with dancing.

… but with a few twists. Our weddingmoon weekend went a little something like this:

Shooting stars. A cold lake dip. Scared runs to & from the outhouse (bears! moose!) Wildflower picking. Nature yoga. A quest for Heady Topper Beer. A gorgeous & uninterrupted mountain landscape. Leaf-peepin'. A sunset wedding picnic. A visit to the Harpoon Brewery. And a champagne-infused, blazing fire-fueled, record-playing dance party!

In short, we celebrated in whatever way we wanted to at each moment. We used our celebration to celebrate ourselves — and no one else. So how did we feel about not inviting our families and friends?

We knew there would be compromise no matter how big or small the wedding was. Our so-called "weddingmoon" wasn't about excluding anyone or not inviting people who were close to us. Instead, it was an exercise in staying true to what made us the most happy, a good first step for our marriage.

Our celebration was about slowing down — not about getting revved up or bogged down with party-details and logistics. It was about enjoying each other's company. It was about creating a space where we could be exactly ourselves and share it with one another. It was about starting our new life together the way that felt most natural, and for us, a weddingmoon captured exactly that.

The weekend turned out more exciting and more awesome than we could have ever imagined and we would do it again in a heartbeat. But will we also go on a honeymoon? You bet.

Featured on The Huffington Post: The First (But Biggest) Steps To Being Successful In Anything You Do

Read below or hop over to HuffPo and read it here: http://huff.to/ZIJxnF

There are two kinds of people in this world: those who make things happen and those who wait for things to happen to them.

For some it comes easy: They are natural risk-takers. They get a rush from new, exciting ventures. They don't care what other people think of their decisions.

For others, not so much: They weigh the options, and then they weigh them again. They try to calculate the exact outcome for success before even making the first step.

I am not the former. I ponder. I ask opinions. I research. I accept advice as truth. Then I hear new advice and make that truth.

I easily, without hesitation, can be persuaded away from my original (and perfectly good) thought, belief, or idea and adapt someone else's.

If I'm not careful, I keep this cycle on repeat which brings my ideas, my dreams, and my thoughts, nowhere.

And for what reason? Fear.

Fear of failure and disappointment. Making a mistake. Regretting a decision. Being rejected. Not having it perfect the first time.

Sound familiar?

When you feel stuck or hesitant about making a move towards something you want, be it your life's calling or one small task, use these 3 steps to work through the fear and make it happen...

1. Listen to your fire.
You know that burning feeling when you're onto something good? Like you just need to pursue it or you feel like you'll burn up? That fire is yours and only yours. If it's burning hot, make a move. Don't let anyone stifle it.

2. Take action.
Take the first step. No matter how small. Maybe it's just putting an idea down on paper. Maybe it's announcing to your office you have a project idea. Maybe it's writing the first words to your book. Maybe it's setting up a meeting with someone in your industry.

Then take the next small action. Then the next. Keep taking small actions. Over and over. The more action, the more clarity. Not the other way around.

3. Don't listen to other people.
Once you put yourself out there you will encounter idea-squashers, naysayers & Debbie downers. Especially if your idea is big.

Take their advice with a grain of salt, but don't take it personally and keep the bellows on the fire.

Fear can only thrive in a space where you give it permission. So instead, give yourself permission to take the first step. Then the second. Then the third.

Success isn't measured by what you accomplish, but how true you stayed to your dreams.

Top 5 Be Well Beauty Faves

There are few beauty products I have been "obsessed" with, but I'm finding the more natural & organic goodies I try, the more I want to tell everyone I know about the ones I love.

I don't know, maybe it's just way more fun for me to say "OMG, I need to spray your face with this rosewater. It's a game-changer, I swear", rather than something like "This eyeliner makes the best cat-eye."

Maybe not a total surprise that I get excited about feel good products, rather than just the kind that make you look good.

So here are my top 5 beauty faves of the moment:

1. The Vitamix
Before you ask... YES this is a beauty product. Why? Because if you're healthy on the inside, you'll look healthy on the outside. Daily green smoothies or other healthy concoctions can totally change the way your skin looks. You'd be surprised how things like acne or eczema can disappear when you limit the processed stuff. I know because it's happened to me.

2. Coconut Oil
Lately I've been digging the Tropical Traditions Gold Label, but I've tried and liked many brands.

What I generally look for is that it's USDA organic and "unrefined" (also known as "virgin" or "pure"). The "refined" variety has been heated in order to extract the flavor out of it & ingredients have been added to further it's shelf-life. Aka it's processed and we don't want that.

I use coconut oil for everything from moisturizer to deodorant to make-up remover (Read my 13 Ways To Use Coconut Oil).

3. RMS Beauty

My sensitive eczema-prone skin does not like anything with strange chemicals or powders, so this better-than-organic makeup line is awesome. I like the product just as much as the packaging -- and for me that's important!

I love the "Un" Cover Up, a cream based concealer that goes on really light & clean. The Lip & Skin Balm in Simply Cocoa is perfect to throw in your bag (anyone else had a coconut oil melt disaster in their purse?) & the Mascara has a really nice natural look... no crunchy, show-girl lashes here.

4. TIZO Sunscreen

Being a longtime sailor and sunbather, I decided it was time to get real with my sunscreen routine. Especially after an extremely close brush with melanoma last year.

I originally got this sunscreen as a gift from my fiance through an old sailing coach years ago and have been using it ever since. It's one of the only sunscreens I have tried that not only doesn't irritate my skin, but makes it feel better than before I used it. My favorite is the Facial Mineral Fusion. It actually has a skin-colored tint so it evens out your skin while blocking it from the sun (aka white zinc without the white). And no, it's not makeup so boys can wear it too.

5. Heritage Store Rosewater Spray

I LOVE this stuff. It smells good, feels good & is unbelievably refreshing. I have literally been known to accost people insisting that they need a spray (and not one person has told me they didn't like it). Post-shower, beach, whenever. I actually have no idea what, if any, health benefits there are to this spray, but for as good as it makes me feel, that's reason enough for me.

Featured on The Huffington Post: 5 Office Yoga Poses (That Won't Freak Out Your Co-workers)

Read below or hop over to HuffPo and read it here: http://huff.to/1tneryk

It's no surprise that sitting at a desk all day is not good for our health. So instead of feeling fidgety with discomfort, try these five yoga poses for a midday feel good stretch that will leave you tension-free and energized. Not to mention your co-workers will be able to continue their conference call, uninterrupted.

1. Seated Backbend
While seated with a straight spine take a deep breath and reach all the way up to the ceiling with your arms open wide. As you exhale, let your gaze slowly draw behind you and bend slightly from your upper back and chest. Hold this for a few seconds, release arms to your sides, then repeat a few times.

2. Seated Twist
Sit in your chair with your spine tall and straight. Take an inhale and on the exhale, twist to one side from the bottom of your spine (more from your abdomen, less from your back) grabbing your armrest. Breathe here for a few seconds, then do the other side.

A seated twist will help with both an achy back from hunching and sitting, as well as keep your digestion in check for those days where you have to grab some food on the go that might not be the most healthy.

3. Wrist Release
Weeks and years of typing can take a toll on your wrists and forearms. I've actually had massage therapists tell me that my forearms are where I have the most knots.

Take a moment with each hand to bend your wrists in each direction. First, With one hand press your fingertips toward the top of your arm, then switch. Then bend each wrist in the opposite direction by pressing your fingertips toward the inside of your wrist. And then to fully release any other tension, put both arms out like a cactus and give your wrists a good rapid shake side to side, then up and down.

4. Desk Shoulder Opener
Scoot your chair out and stand a few feet from your desk so just your hands can touch. Drop your head between your arms to achieve a good shoulder stretch. This will counteract the hunching that inevitably happens when sitting at a desk and typing, while also getting your shoulders back into proper alignment.

5. Forward Fold
If you can get away with legs up a wall or kicking into a handstand, by all means. But to keep from distracting the office a forward fold will do the trick.

Stand next to your desk, fold over in half with soft knees and let gravity take over. Hold for at least 20 seconds and sway side to side if that feels good. By letting your arms and head hang, your neck and shoulders will decompress from all that computer typing. Plus, reversing the blood flow will give you a boost of energy for the rest of your work day.

Juicing vs. Smoothies

I get this question a lot & I hear folks using these terms interchangeably, but really they are quite different.

The main difference: fiber.

Smoothies keep the plant fiber, juicing discards it.

Smoothies are made in a blender, juicing in a juicer.

When you make a smoothie, you generally peel, deseed, and pit whatever variety of fruits and veggies you choose, then add some water & throw into a blender. You blend until everything is smooth and drink it up.

Since smoothies keep all the plant fiber, they are more filling and can count as the better half of a meal. Plus the fiber helps you feel full longer and is important for digestion. Having a daily green smoothie keeps me feeling good & energized.

Check out How To Make The Perfect Green Smoothie.

To juice, you feed the fruits and veggies through a juicer (sometimes with skins & seeds, no water) and what comes out is a pulpless juice.

Although the yield is much smaller, you can pack in more fruits and veggies, therefore more vitamins. Some also claim juicing gives your digestion a "break".

I personally do smoothies most of the time because I want to keep the healthy fiber.

However, I have been known to make juice - like my Sunshine Turmeric Juice or Beet Carrot Clementine Juice when I want something light and refreshing. I don't own a juicer so I use my Vitamix* (WTF is a Vitamix?). To do this I generally add a small amount of water, stay away from emulsifying fruits (like banana or avocado) and strain everything after it's blended.

Whether you choose to juice or smoothie, it really comes down to preference and what you already have in your diet. If you're already consuming raw fruits & veggies daily, then juice might be a great addition. If you're on the go and want to get your greens in quick and easy, a smoothie might be best for you. Or drink a combo! Mixing it up is always good.
